UNIT(e) Artist Talk – Tom Dale in conversation with Ben Borthwick
Join us, grab a drink, and hear independent curator and writer Ben Borthwick in conversation with Tom Dale, an artist who works with film, sculpture, performance and installation whose current film ‘A Cage For Voices’ commissioned by Channel 4 TV will be broadcast in August.
Ben Borthwick: Independent curator and writer with expertise in contemporary art, Modernism and sound. Working in the UK and internationally Ben is currently director of the MIART talks and Artistic Director of Plymouth Arts Centre.
Formerly CEO and artistic director of Cardiff’s Artes Mundi (2010-2012) and assistant curator at Tate Modern (2003-2010), in his recent capacity as independent curator Borthwick has been working with the visual artists Andrea Büttner, Rosa Barba and Knut Asdam to develop new commissions and international touring projects.
Tom Dale: Born Kendal, UK 1974. A Goldsmiths graduate and former Doctoral researcher at Anglia Ruskin University, Cambridge, he is the recipient of numerous grants and awards.
His work is regularly featured in publications such as Flash Art, ArtReview, Art Monthly, The Guardian, Time Out, Dazed & Confused and World of Interiors. Recent solo exhibitions at the John Hansard gallery, Southampton and NIMAC, Cyprus, presented ambitious bodies of work that included film, sculpture, performance and installation. Forthcoming commissions for Centre for Contemporary Art, Christchurch, New Zealand and Museu de Arte de Brasília will continue in this vein. His current film ‘A Cage For Voices’ commissioned by Channel 4 TV will be broadcast in August 2017. A forthcoming publication ‘Volatile Structures’ includes texts by writer and Guardian critic Brian Dillon; Jon Wood, head of research at the Henry Moore Foundation and curator and critic Jennifer Thatcher. He is represented by Copperfield Gallery, London and Aeroplastics, Brussels.
